What Is BrainPop?
If you are looking for a new way to challenge your child, engage their higher order thinking skills, increase retention, and do so in a safe kid-friendly online environment, then BrainPOP may be what you are looking for.  BrainPOP is a highly interactive, educational website designed to engage students in a wide variety of content areas including; Math, Language Arts, Reading, Science, Social Studies, STEAM and more.  Brain Pop and BrainPop Jr are targeted at students aged Kindergarten thru eighth grade.  The best part is, it's FREE!!  Your student's Clever login will allow them to access all areas of BrainPOP and save their progress and activities.

Contact your advisor, or visit BrainPOP.com,  for ideas on how you can use BrainPOP alongside your current curriculum.  BrainPop and BrainPOP Jr may be accessed through the Twindly Online Learning Page or Student Links on the MSBSD website.

Do you have a student who soaks up everything you give them and asks for more? Are you often looking for activities and worksheets for your child to take along in the car, on the airplane, or to grandma's house? Or does your child simply need extra material for practice. Education.com has long been one of my go to websites for educational worksheets to help differentiate my instruction.

Digital Citizenship has been around for a while but with the passing of every year it is becoming increasingly important to teach our students what it means to be a digital citizen and the responsibilities that go along with it. Commonsence.org has is a non-profit that advocates for children and their education. They have lots of great information on children and technology.

When it comes to finding reviews of common curriculum, it's hard to beat Cathy Duffy. She has been at it for a long time and offers great insight into most of the popular curriculum options out there.

"I wonder..."
Maintaining the sense of wonder is one of the greatest gifts we can give our students.  Mystery Doug is a great website to help answer many of those "I wonder..." questions while inspiring many more.

Similar to Mystery Doug, Wonderopolis is a fantastic place to find answers to many common questions. Hopefully, not only will Wonderopolis help answer your wonders of the world, but inspire you to wonder more.

With the proliferation of fake news, it's often difficult to know what is fact and what is fiction. Politifact is one of several websites which help students and adults sort through all the information and help us to make informed and educated decisions.

Allsides tries to present current news and events from both sides.  It's a great way for students to see there is often more than one side to the story and when we understand both sides we will better be able to make informed decisions. It also helps our students to look at news stories critically and help them to identify biases in media.

TED has become one of the main sources for inspirational and educational videos. TED Ed continues that tradition with insightful and inspiring videos geared toward students of all ages.

Making content accessible to all readers has always been a challenge.  Newsela is trying to change that.  Newsela presents news articles on  current events and topics in a format which allows for the teacher to adjust the reading level to meet the needs of their student.  Imagine being able to have all your students be able to read the same article and content, regardless of their reading level.

Everytime I go on BrainPop it just keeps getting better and better.  BrainPop offers educational videos and activities on a wide array of topics.  In addition, Brainpop has a great mind mapping activity and games that really help to solidify your child's understanding of the content.  BrainPop also has many primary sources available for students to delve further into the topics.  Student can even make their own BrainPop movies!!  The site is free for all students in Alaska and if they use their student login information, BrainPop will keep track of their progress and projects so they may continue where they left off.

Epic! is a fantastic app for online books.  Epic! has thousands of titles which children can either read or have read to them.  Great for those long car rides to Anchorage.  There is a small monthly fee but I feel it is more than worth it.
